The Roman society was classified into two broad groups:

The Patricians: The patricians were the aristocratic Romans belonging to the upper class of Roman society. The heads of the patrician families formed an assembly called the senate. The function of the senate was to advise the king in matters of state administration. In subsequent years, the senate became even more powerful and began to exercise sizeable influence on decision making.

The Plebeian Class: The Plebeian class consisted of the common people of Rome. It included farmers and artisans. They were disallowed from taking part in the affairs of the government. Moreover, plebeians could not marry patricians.
