Sirimavo Ratwatte Dias Bandaranaike, born on April 17, 1916,was a prominent Sri Lankan stateswoman. Throughout her political career, she held the position of prime minister on three separate occasions and was a key figure in the Sri Lanka Freedom Party. Notably, she made history by becoming the world's first elected female head of government. Her political ideologies closely aligned with socialism, mirroring those of her late husband, Prime Minister Solomon Bandaranaike, who was tragically assassinated in 1959. Remarkably, all three of their children went on to play roles in the Sri Lankan government.
Over the span of four decades, she dedicated herself to public service, finally stepping down from her political duties on August 10, 2000. Tragically, just two months later, on October 10, 2000, at the age of 84, she passed away due to a heart attack.
