The introduction of Indian education was originally undertaken by the British administration in order to create a class of clerks who could help run the Empire. However, apart from serving that purpose, this policy also bore some other results. Western education brought with it modern ideas of liberty, freedom and fraternity. Rational thinking transformed the Indian mindset and turned it towards nationalism and democracy. Knowledge about the success of the French Revolution and the American War of Independence also stoked the feelings of nationalism. Many of those who were inspired by all this later on went on to participate in the national movement.
