Expert Answer
The Chinese script is a form of picture writing, and each picture is the symbol of an idea. The Chinese language does not have letters of the alphabet like in English. In the initial period of the script’s development, there were as many as 40,000 word-pictures. This made it difficult for the common populace to understand and learn the script. Therefore, for a long time, education remained outside the reach of the masses and became a monopoly of a small privileged minority.
