The Indian National Army fought shoulder to shoulder with the imperial Japanese army. It overran many territories and soon crossed the Indian border through Burma. Kohima and Imphal were captured and the Indian tricolour was unfurled at the latter in 1944. However, these victories proved short lived as the British soon regained control of the lost territories in Burma and the Japanese were beaten back. Eventually, the Indian National Army was defeated and its soldiers were taken prisoners by the British Indian Army.
