Expert Answer
In 509 BCE, Romans revolted against the king and established a republic. A republic is a form of government where there is no king or monarch and the country is governed by a group of people elected by the masses. The Roman republic, however, was an oligarchy, i.e. the power was concentrated in the hands of a few people. Two officials called consuls were elected by the senate for a duration of one year. Their task was to govern the country. Also, in a situation of emergency, a dictator could be appointed for a duration of 6 months.
