Unlike the period before 1848, the years from 1848 to 1914 were characterised with internal peace within states but also increased tension and wars among the states. The Italian nationalists were bent upon uniting the many independent states of the Italian peninsula and free the Italian people from Austrian domination. The Prussians too had taken it upon themselves to repel Austrian domination and unite the German states and principalities into one strong German nation.
