The following are three important characteristics of the Indus Valley Civilisation:
Society: Historians argue that the Harappan society consisted of various social groups. It included such socio-economic classes such as rulers, merchants, traders, artisans, farmers and manual labourers.
Food: The staple food of the Harappan people was wheat. They also cultivated crops like barley, mustard, fruits and vegetables. Animal produce such as milk, meat, fish and eggs was also part of the Harappan diet.
Recreation and Amusements: The people of the Harappan Valley Civilisation civilisation preferred indoor games over outdoor ones. Free time was spent dancing, singing and playing board games with dice. A game similar to modern chess was also played. Toys were mainly made of baked clay or terracotta and included varied items such as wheeled carts, dolls, animals with movable heads, sliding monkeys, rattles and whistles.
