The Gupta kings were passionate followers of Lord Vishnu and hence were called Vaishnavas. They patronised Hinduism and performed religious sacrifices like the Ashwamedha yagna. Temples were built on a large scale and idol worship was widespread. The Bhakti cult gained in popularity during this period and a large number of people became its followers since it was a simple, inexpensive and a personal way of worship. Although the Guptas patronised Buddhism, they also followed a policy of religious tolerance. The Buddhist university at Nalanda was supported by the Guptas, and Jainism was also allowed a free reign during this period.
