The four main features of the cold weather season in India are:

  1. The cold weather season in India begins in mid November in Northern India and stays till February with December and January being the coldest months.
  2. During the cold season, the days are warm and the nights are cold. When the temperature decreases, frost is commonly experienced in Northern India.
  3. The cold season in most parts of the country is dry as the northeast trade winds blow from land to sea.
  4. Many cyclonic disturbances occur over northern India during this time. These results in rainfall during winters and snowfall in the Himalayan regions. This winter rainfall helps in the cultivation of the rabi crops.
