The Constitution of 1791 limited the powers of the French monarchy. Powers were now divided among the legislature, executive and judiciary. France thus became a constitutional monarchy.

Only men above 25 years of age who paid required taxes had the voting rights. The remaining men and all women did not have any voting rights.

In 1792, newly elected assembly was called the Convention. It completely abolished monarchy and France became a republic. All men of 21 years and above, regardless of wealth, got the right to vote.
