Rajaraja I was popularly known as ‘Rajaraja the great’. He is famous for having defeated several neighbouring kingdoms in order to expand his territories.  His empire extended from Kalinga in the north to Cape Comorin in the South. He also vanquished Ceylon (present day Sri Lanka) and certain islands in the Bay of Bengal. He constructed a strong navy in order to protect his coastal territories. One of the unique features his reign was the growth of local self-government. He also ordered the construction of the famous Brihadeshwara Temple at Thanajvur.
