Most amphibians spend part of their lives underwater and part on land. Most females lay eggs in water and the young ones called larvae or tadpoles, live in the water. They use gills to breathe and search food for themselves. As the tadpoles grow, they develop legs and lungs that allow them to live on land. This drastic change in appearance and form is called metamorphosis.
