ICSE Class 9 Answered

A metal plate of length 1.5 m and width 0.2 m is placed 40 cm below alcohol of density 800 kg m-3. If the atmospheric pressure is 80 cm of mercury, calculate the force experienced by the plate. [ Density of mercury is 13,600 kg m-3 and g= 10 ms-2].

Surface area (A) of plate= 1.5 m x 0.2m = 0.3 m2

Pressure due to air only=  x g=

                                 = 108,800 Pa.

Pressure due to alcohol only =  x g = 0.40m x 800 kg m-3  x 10 ms-2 = 3200 Pa

Therefore total pressure (P) acting on plate = (108,800 +3200) = 1,12,000 Pa.

Therefore force acting on plate = P x A = 1,12,000 x 0.3 = 33,600 N.
