A man is sitting on the shore of a river. He is in the line of a 1.0m long boat and is 5.5m away from the centre of the boat. He wishes to throw an apple into the boat. If he can throw an apple into the boat. He wishes to throw an apple into the boat. If he can throw the apple only with a speed of 10m/s, find the minimum and maximum angles of projection for suceeful shot. Assume that the point of projection and the edge of the boat are in the same horizontal level

As shown in figure, when apple is thrown from A to B, range is 4.5 m. Similarly, when apple is thrown from A to C, range is 6.5 m.

Range of projectile  R = ( u2sin2α ) / g  , where u is projection velocity and α is angle of projection.

Angle of projection α for given range R is given by,  α = begin mathsize 12px style 1 half sin to the power of negative 1 end exponent open parentheses fraction numerator R cross times g over denominator u squared end fraction close parentheses end style
required angle of projection to throw apple from A to B is given by,  begin mathsize 12px style alpha space equals space 1 half sin to the power of negative 1 end exponent open parentheses fraction numerator 4.5 cross times 9.8 over denominator 10 cross times 10 end fraction close parentheses space equals space 13 degree end style
required angle of projection to throw apple from A to C is given by, begin mathsize 12px style alpha space equals space 1 half sin to the power of negative 1 end exponent open parentheses fraction numerator 6.5 cross times 9.8 over denominator 10 cross times 10 end fraction close parentheses space equals space 20 degree end style
