# a boatman crosses a float after 1hr of this event boatman takes a u-turn and it again crosses the float but now the float is at 6km from its initial position of the float, find the velocity of the river

Let the boatman travel u km/hr along the river flow direction.
Let the river flow speed is v km/hr, hence the float also travels v km/hr along the river flow direction.

Intially boatman travelled 1 hour with relative speed (u+v) km/hr. So after travelling a distance of (u+v) km he takes a u turn.

During return journey he meets the float at a distance of 6 km from initial crossing point. Hence the boatman has travelled (u+v-6) km with speed (u-v) km/hr.

let us equate the time taken by boatman and the time taken by the float to travel 6 km as given below

From the above equation we will get  u(v-3) = 0. since u ≠ 0 we will get v = 3
