a boatman crosses a float after 1hr of this event boatman takes a u-turn and it again crosses the float but now the float is at 6km from its initial position of the float,find the velocity of the river

Let the boatman travel u km/hr along the river flow direction.
Let the river flow speed is v km/hr, hence the float also travels v km/hr along the river flow direction.
 
Intially boatman travelled 1 hour with relative speed (u+v) km/hr. So after travelling a distance of (u+v) km he takes a u turn.
 
During return journey he meets the float at a distance of 6 km from initial crossing point. Hence the boatman has travelled (u+v-6) km with speed (u-v) km/hr.
 
let us equate the time taken by boatman and the time taken by the float to travel 6 km as given below
 
begin mathsize 12px style 1 plus space fraction numerator u plus v minus 6 over denominator u minus v end fraction space equals space 6 over v
end style
From the above equation we will get  u(v-3) = 0. since u ≠ 0 we will get v = 3
