Democracy can be measured on the following basis:
  • Accountable, responsive and legitimate government: Democracy provides people with the the right to choose their rulers and have control over them. Therefore, in this manner it helps people to elect a government that is accountable to the citizens, and responsive to the needs and expectations.
  • Economic growth and development: As democracy is based on the principal of equality, it is bound to bring about economic growth and development in the country.
  • Reduction of inequality and poverty: Democracy is based on equality. Everyone is considered equal in the eyes of law and awarded equal oppurtunities.
  • Accommodation of social diversity: Democracy is the binding force that helps to keep together various social and ethno religious classes. It is the only form of government that attempts to accomodate social difference instead of ignoring or suppressing them.
  • Dignity and freedom of the citizens: This is the basis of democracy as every individual wishes to recieve respect from fellow beings. Therefore, democracy stands superior to any other form of government in promoting dignity and freedom of the individual.
