Expert Answer:

According to the census of 2011, the population of India had crossed the one billion mark. Although India has only 2.4% of the world’s area, it accounts for 16.7% of the population.

The population density of India in 2011 was 364 persons per sq km. Within India, the population density is highly uneven. While the state of West Bengal has a population density of 904 persons per sq km, Arunachal Pradesh has a population density of only 12 persons per sq km.
