Why does the author call the two boys 'friends'?

Expert Answer:

The two boys, Nicolo and Jacopo were extremely helpful to the author and his friend. They went out of their way to do favours for the two  including buying the cigarette packs , booking seats for the opera and suggesting good restaurants to them. This made the author refer to them as friends.
