Expert Answer
The word India comes from the river Indus, called Sindhu, in Sanskrit. About 2500 years ago, when the Iranians and Greeks came through the northwest, they got familiar with the Indus, and called it the Hindos or the Indos. Thus, the land to the east of the river was named India.
