What are the characteristics of red soil?

The following are the important characteristics of red soil:
- It has got its name from its colour.
- It is porous and has a high percentage of iron oxide.
- In general, it is found to be shallow and its pH value ranges from 6.6 to 8.0.
- It is loose and aerated and is poor in terms of the quantity of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and organic matter
- It is not fertile, but it does respond to fertilisers. It needs irrigation support if it is to be cultivated.
- It contains soluble salts in small quantities.
