One Party Sysyem

In one party system, only one political party rules over the country. This party system exists in dictatorial countries like China.

Merits: It usually bring about stability in government because there is usually no power struggle between too many political parties just for the sake of controlling the government.

There is also easier and faster decision making as there is no opposition to oppose party’s policies.

Demerits: It’s a dictatorial government where no freedom is given to the citizens of the country. Undoubtedly, one-party system is more susceptible to corruption in government because political powers of the country are concentrated in the hand of one person or group of persons.

Two Party System

A country which has two main political parties contesting for elections is called as a two-party system. Example- the USA.

Merits: The two-party system encourages democracy because the people can choose their leaders from any of the two major political parties.

It brings about stability in government. Also, the principle of checks and balances in a two-party system also forces the government to be transparent because if it fails to be so, the opposition party will use it against the government.

Demerits: A two party system in a large country resided by heterogenous population does not represent the views of diverse population of the country.

The two-party system leaves people with fewer alternative choices and it promotes corruption.
