- Mitochondria are scattered throughout the cytoplasm.
- Mitochondria are oval or rod-shaped structures surrounded by double membranes. The inner membrane has folds called cristae which help in increasing its surface area.
- On the walls of cristae, food combines with oxygen to produce ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) which is the primary energy source of the cell.
- Hence, mitochondria are also termed as power houses of the cell converting the chemical energy stored in food into readily usable biological energy.
