Expert Answer
If we take some water at 0oC and start heating it, we find that in the temperature range 0oC to 4oC, it contracts instead of expanding. Thus, density of water increases.
On heating it further above 4oC, its volume increases. Thus, density of water decreases.
This expansion of water when it is cooled from 4oC to 0oC is called anomaluous expansion of water. It helps in preserving the aquatic life during very cold weather.
