A rectangular garden 86.5 m by 52.5 m is to be constructed. Two paths, each 3 m wide, are cut across the middle, one parallel to the length and the other parallel to the breadth. Find the total area of the paths.

Total area of the paths
= area of rect. EFGH + area of rect IJKL
- area of square MNOP
= 86.5 X 3 + 52.5 X 3 -3 X 3
= 259.5 + 157.5 - 9
= 408 m2
