Nitration requires strong mixtures of nitric and other (usually sulfuric) acids.Acids quickly protonate the NH2 group of aniline and convert it to a NH3+ group, which is strongly deactivating. Also, a nitration mixture can oxidize the NH2 group, and convert it to a variety of oxidized products.
If you protect the amino group as an amide, then it is no longer basic, and it is not easily oxidized.
