4 resisters were connected in a diamond shaped circuit in such a way that on each side of the polygon there was a resistor.how can we know which one is connected in parallel ,and which one in series?

Resistors are said to connect in paralle if they have same potential across them, and in series if they are connected one after other and have equal current flowing through them.
Eg in the diamond circuit:
the combination of resistances R1 and R2 are in series as they will have equal current flowing through them as no other branching occurs in between.
But combinations of R1-R2 and R3-R4 are in parallel as they are across same potential: Vb - Va
