Like if a particle is oscillating about its mean position, cant the disturbance simply be transfered to the next set of particles cause they are attatched and have intermolecular force of attraction?

Why do series of compressions and rarefactions take place?

have you seen spring/slinky?
notice it . produce jerk  at one end..then things will be clear.
this is property of any elastic medium.....if we disturb it at one place it will always try to regain its original shape and size...so in doing so a successive compression and ratrefaction is already produced.
