hydrogen shares electron and  form a  hydrogen molecule .Hydrogen atom has 1 valence electron .Covalent bond in hydrogen is formed when one hydrogen atom shares its valence electron with the valence electron of other hydrogen atom .this sharing of electron results in formation of hydrogen molecule.

Hydrogen loses electron and forms hydrogen ion when an ionic compound containing hydrogen atom dissociates into its ions .(hydrogen atom  being one of its constituent ion ).H2O ? H+ + OH-
