How does diffraction limit the resolving power of optical instruments?

Due to differaction, the light coming from two close objects (making a slit) differact (single slit differaction) and make a bright and dark pattern, thus distorting the atual image.
Since resolving power of an instrument comes from its ability to make clear image of two close objects, thus it decreases.
