how can we calculate the group no of an element if its atomic no is given

It depends on the block of the element
 
If the element is of s block than group number =number of  outer most shell electrons.
 
If the element is of p block the group number  = 10 + number of outermost shell electrons.
 
If the element is of d block than the group number = 2 + number of penultimate shell electrons
