How can we calculate oxidation state of an element in a given compound?

knowing the charge of the complex ion, we can calculate the oxidation no. of the central metal atom.
step 1. let us assume the oxidation state of the atom to be x .and oxidation number of other species is substituted .
step 2. the sum of the oxidation numbers is equated to be the total change of the complex and the value of x is calculated .
lets us take an example for understanding it in abetter way.
[CoCl(NH3)5]2+    :    x-1+5 (0)=+2
                                    x = +3
            oxidation state of Co = +3
