during lightning,the charges flow from low potential to high potential.how can you tell that the charges in clouds are at lower potential than the ground?

Answer:
Charge will never flow from lower potential to higher potential unless some external work is done on charge.
Charge will always flow from higher potential to lower potential. During lightning, clouds are at higher potential .
Hence lightning takes place from higher potential clouds to zero potential grounds
