A:

Dear Harshita,

Although a member of the Triple Alliance, led by Germany and Austria-Hungary, Italy was uncomfortable with being a part of the alliance that featured the Austrians within its ranks. Italians had fought against Austria in the Risorgimento in the 19th century. It was felt by the Italian leadership that Austria would do everything in its power to limit the territorial gains of Italy if the Triple Alliance war effort was successful. Hence, Italy changed its loyalties during the First World War.
