Let i be the current passing through the 100Ω resistance and unknown resistance X.
 
then for balance to occur when P and Y are connected : 100×i = (50/100)v.....................(1)
for balance to occur when P and Y are connected : (100+X)×i = (58.8/100)v0 ...................(2)
 
dividing (2) by (1) :

  solving for x, we get x = 17.6 Ω
