Initially both the leaves have same sign of charge. Separation of leaves proportional to product of charges i.e. if magnatiude of charges
on each leaf is Q, then separation is proportional to Q2. When X-ray is passing through electroscope, it ionise the air molecules present in its path.
Equal amount of negative and positive charges produced. Hence these charges neutralise the charges present in one leaf and
is getting added to the charges present in other leaf.
Now the magnatiude of product of charges (Q+dq)(Q-dq) = Q2 - dq×dq which is less than Q2.
Hence the separation of leaves decreases or leaves are collapsed
