Why does carbon reduces the oxides of Zn and Fe?

Answer:
Carbon is used as reducing agent for less electropositive metals or the metals that lies below "Al" in the reactivity series.
 
Since Coal is readily available as the source of C - it is a cheap and economical method for extraction of metals like Fe, Zn etc.
