An umbrella organisation is an organisation or a party which provides resources and often an identity to the smaller organisations. Before 1969, the Congress party was an umbrella party which accomodated and gave voices to the leaders and workers of having diverse ideologies. It was after 1970, that the Congress party now identified itself with a particular ideology, claiming to be the only socialist and pro-poor party.
