Synecdoche is a figure of speech which uses a part to designate the whole or a whole is to designate a part.

Examples:

Part for the whole:

He has many mouths to feed.

The phrase 'many mouths' refers to the people dependant on him. Thus, a part i.e. mouth is use for the whole persons.

Whole for the part:

India won the world cup in 2010.

The word 'India' refers to the Indian team and not the entire county. Hence, the whole i.e. India is used for a part i.e. the team.
