Iodine can be used for wound cleansing and debridement , and for the prevention and treatment of infection. Recent research has generated interest in its ability to promote healing by influencing the production and activity of certain cells in the immune system .
The term iodine is sometimes used to denote all iodine formulations, when in fact there are two distinct preparations:
- Povidone iodine, which is available in a number of liquid formulations or as an impregnated tulle;
- Cadexomer iodine, which is available as a powder, an ointment or a dressing.
