In sodium chloride, chloride ions can be considered as having a cubic close-packed structure ( i.e. face centred cubic). The sodium ions occupy the octahedral holes (voids) in the cubic close-packed type lattice of chloride ions.
There are 6 octahedral holes around each chloride ion, therefore each chloride ion is surrounded by six sodium ions. Similarly, each sodium ion is surrounded by six chloride ions.
Therefore in NaCl co-ordination no. of Cl- ion is 6 and that of Na+ ion is also 6 i.e., a 6:6 coordination.
