Galvanometer is a basic instrument that consists of a delicate coil that deflects due to the current passing through it.
Ammeter is an galvanometer that has a low resistance shunt connected parallely
In Voltmeter or millivoltmeter, high resistance is connected in series with galvanometer to ensure very low current passing through moving coil galvanometer.
 
millivoltmeter is meant for measuring milli voltage, whereas voltmeter will be connected across high potential difference, hence if similar moving coil galvanometer is used as milli-volt meter or voltmeter, voltmeter will have very high resistance
