With reference to the concept of evolution, natural selection plays a significant role in the production of new species. This process operating on variability in the population, over millions of years, has given rise to great diversity in the biological world.

A similar process of selection for generations has been used for improving the qualities of domesticated plants and animals by humans through intensive breeding. This process is called artificial selection. Artifical selection is the process of selecting genetically improved and domesticated plants and animals and interbreeding them to get individuals of desired genetic traits. In artificial selection, the role of nature is carried by man.
