As shown in figure, swimmer should swim in a direction facing towards river flow direction and makes angle θ with the river bank.
Velocity vector of swimmer can be resolved in the direction of river flow and in vertical direction as shown in figure.
If vm and angle θ are so chosen that it satisfies thecondition vmcosθ = vr, then there will not be any drift to swimmer due to river flow.
Swimmer will cross the river in a time d / (vmsinθ)
