Elaborate the problems faced by epigraphists?

Answer:
Historians and scholars who study inscriptions are known as epigraphists. Some problems faced by them are:
  • It is not easy to decipher inscriptions which were written thousands of years ago. Some letters may be faintly engraved which makes it difficult to read them.
  • It is not always easy to be sure about the exact meaning of the words used in inscriptions. It is because even the meaning of the word changes over centuries.
  • Inscriptional evidences cannot be taken at face value. It is because they only recorded the orders of the kings and rich priests.
  • Inscriptions are not the perfect sources of history becuase these only tell us about the orders of the king and his policies. Inscriptions do not tell us anything about the conditions of common people. Routine agricultural practices and the joys and sorrows of daily existence find no mention in inscriptions.
