- After the disintegration of the post Cold war era, Establishment of democracy was not given a priority. Constitutions of the former republics of USSR gave wide powers to the President. The President in some eastern European countries became a dictator.
- There were conflicts in various countries after the break-up of former USSR. In Russia, two republics, Chechnya and Dagestan, have had violent secessionist movements.
- In Tajikistan, a civil war continued for a period of 10 years till 2001.
- Georgia is witnessing a civil war because of the demand of two of its provinces for independence.
- A severe conflict took place in the Balkan republics of Yugoslavia. After 1991, it broke into various provinces such as Croatia, Slovenia and Bosnia and Herzegovina declaring independence.
Thus, we can say that immediately after the disintegration of the former USSR, there was political instability in various newly independent countries. These countries suffered due to dictatorships, insurgencies and civil wars.
