A police chase a thief with a velocity uniform velocity 'v'. When the jeep was at a distance 'd' from a thief then the thief fled from the rest with an acceleration 'a'. so prove that the police caught the thief if v>=root over 2ad.

Let after t seconds police catching the thief from the instance of thief's fleeing with acceleration 'a' ;
 
distance travelled by thief starting from rest = (1/2)×a×t2 ....................... (1)
 
distance travelled by police with uniform velocity = v×t ......................(2)
 
initially there is a gap of distance d ;
 
hence, we have,   v×t = (1/2)×a×t2 + d  ....................(3)
 
eqn.(3) is rewritten as,  at2 - 2×v×t + 2d = 0 ............(4)
 
above quadratic eqn. has +ve solution if  (2×v)2 > 8×a×d  or begin mathsize 12px style v space greater than space square root of 2 cross times a cross times d end root end style
