The man drops the chain when half of its length is in vertical position. hence only half of its length is placed by man.
 
Let l be the full length of chain and m be its total mass. To place the chain of length l/2 on a table,
the decrease in potential energy (m/2)×g×(l/2) = (1/4)m×g×l joules
 
The decrease in potential energy given above,  is the workdone by man. when he drops the other half there is no workdone by him
