When 500 kg load is at a depth of 100m, Total mass to be lifted is (mass of load+mass of rope) = 500+100 = 600 kg
 
At the top of 100 m height, only mass of load 500 kg left. 
Hence mass to be lifted varies as (600 - y)kg, where y is the distance measured from the bottom of shaft.
