a body X with a momentum p collides with another identical stationary body Y one dimensionally. During the collision Y gives an impulse J to body X. Then what is the coefficient of restitution in terms of J and p?

Answer:
if initial velocity of X is u m/s , then after collision its velocity will be -u×e m/s
change in momentum = m[ u - (-u×e) ] = mu(1+e) = p(1+e) ............(1)

where e is coeffficient of restitution

impulse = change in momentum

Hence J = p(1+e)  or e = (J/p) -1
